seventh story
of the pace of the snow een and what happened there at st
the walls of the pace were ford of drifted snow, and the dows and doors of the cuttg ds
there were ore than a hundred roos it, all as if they had been ford with snow blown tother
其中最大的房间绵延数英里;
the rst of the extended for several iles;
they were all lighted up by the vivid light of the aurora, and they were r and epty, icy ld and glitterg! there were no aents here, not even a little bear’s ball, when the stor ight have been the ic, and the bears uld have danced on their hd legs, and shown their good anners
there were no pleasant gas of snap - dragon, or touch, or even a gossip over the tea - table, for the young - dy foxes
epty, vast, and ld were the halls of the snow een
the flickerg f of the northern lights uld be ply seen, whether they rose high or low the heavens, fro every part of the castle
在它那空旷无垠的雪之大厅中央有一个结冰的湖,湖面破碎成千万种形状;
the idst of its epty, endless hall of snow was a frozen ke, broken on its surface to a thoand fors;
each piece resebled another, fro beg itself perfect as a work of art, and the centre of this ke sat the snow een, when she was at ho
she called the ke “the irror of rean,” and said that it was the best, and deed the only one the world
小凯冻得浑身青紫,几乎变成黑色了,但他感觉不到;
little kay was ite be with ld, deed alost bck, but he did not feel it;
for the snow een had kissed away the icy shivergs, and his heart was already a p of ice
他来回拖着一些锋利、扁平的冰块,把它们摆成各种各样的姿势,好像他想用它们做出些什么东西;
he dragd sharp, ft pieces of ice to and fro, and pced the tother all kds of positions, as if he wished to ake thg out of the;
jt as we try to for vario figures with little tablets of wood which we call “a chese puzzle”
凯的手指非常灵巧;
kay’s frs were very artistic;
他玩的是冰冷的理智游戏,在他眼里,这些图形非常了不起,而且极其重要;
it was the icy ga of rean at which he pyed, and his eyes the figures were very rearkable, and of the highest iportance;
this opion was og to the piece of gss still stickg his eye
he posed any plete figures, forg different words, but there was one word he never uld ana to for, although he wished it very uch
it was the word “eternity”
the snow een had said to hi, “when you can fd out this, you shall be your own aster, and i will give you the whole world and a new pair of skates”
but he uld not acplish it
“now i t hasten away to warr untries,” said the snow een
“i will go and look to the bck craters of the s of the burng ountas, etna and vesuvi, as they are called, — i shall ake the look white, which will be good for the, and for the leons and the grapes”
然后白雪皇后飞走了,留下小凯独自一人在这个长达数英里的大厅里;
and away flew the snow een, leavg little kay ite alone the great hall which was any iles length;
he sat and looked at his pieces of ice, and was thkg deeply, and sat still, that any one ight have supposed he was frozen
jt at this ont it happened that little rda ca through the great door of the castle
凛冽的寒风在她周围呼啸,但她祈祷了一下,风就平息下来,好像要入睡了;
cuttg ds were ragg around her, but she offered up a prayer and the ds sank down as if they were gog to sleep;
她继续往前走,直到来到这个又大又空的大厅,看到了凯;
and she went on till she ca to the r epty hall, and caught sight of kay;
她立刻就认出了他;
she knew hi directly;
she flew to hi and threw her ars round his neck, and held hi fast, while she excid, “kay, dear little kay, i have found you at st”
but he sat ite still, stiff and ld
then little rda wept hot tears, which fell on his breast, and perated to his heart, and thawed the p of ice, and washed away the little piece of gss which had stuck there
then he looked at her, and she sang —
“roses bloo and cease to be,
but we shall the christ - child see”
then kay burst to tears, and he wept that the splter of gss swa out of his eye
then he regnized rda, and said, joyfully, “rda, dear little rda, where have you been all this ti, and where have i been”
and he looked all around hi, and said, “how ld it is, and how r and epty it all looks,” and he cng to rda, and she ughed and wept for joy
看到他们这样真让人高兴,冰块甚至都欢快地跳动起来;
it was pleasg to see the that the pieces of ice even danced about;
and when they were tired and went to lie down, they ford theselves to the letters of the word which the snow een had said he t fd out before he uld be his own aster, and have the whole world and a pair of new skates
然后格尔达亲吻他的脸颊,他的脸颊变得红润起来;
then rda kissed his cheeks, and they beca bloog;
她亲吻他的眼睛,他的眼睛变得像她自己的眼睛一样明亮;
and she kissed his eyes, and they shone like her own;
she kissed his hands and his feet, and then he beca ite healthy and cheerful
the snow een ight e ho now when she pleased, for there stood his certaty of freedo, the word she wanted, written shg letters of ice
then they took each other by the hand, and went forth fro the great pace of ice
they spoke of the grandother, and of the roses on the roof, and as they went on the ds were at rest, and the sun burst forth
when they arrived at the bh with red berries, there stood the redeer waitg for the, and he had brought another young redeer with hi, whose udders were full, and the children drank her war ilk and kissed her on the outh
then they carried kay and rda first to the fnd woan, where they ward theselves thoroughly the hot roo, and she gave the directions about their journey ho
next they went to the pnd woan, who had ade new clothes for the, and put their sleighs order
both the redeer ran by their side, and followed the as far as the boundaries of the untry, where the first green leaves were buddg
and here they took leave of the o redeer and the pnd woan, and all said — farewell
然后鸟儿开始叽叽喳喳地叫,森林里也长满了嫩绿的新叶;
then the birds began to itter, and the forest too was full of green young leaves;
and out of it ca a beautiful horse, which rda rebered, for it was one which had drawn the golden ach
a young girl was ridg upon it, with a shg red cap on her head, and pistols her belt
她就是小强盗女孩,她已经厌倦了待在家里;
it was the little robber - aiden, who had got tired of stayg at ho;
she was gog first to the north, and if that did not suit her, she ant to try other part of the world
she knew rda directly, and rda rebered her:
it was a joyful etg
“you are a fe fellow to go gaddg about this way,” said she to little kay, “i should like to know whether you deserve that any one should go to the end of the world to fd you”
but rda patted her cheeks, and asked after the prce and prcess
“they are gone to foreign untries,” said the robber - girl
“and the crow”
asked rda
“哦,乌鸦死了,” 她回答说;
“oh, the crow is dead,” she replied;
“his ta sweetheart is now a widow, and wears a bit of bck worsted round her leg
she ourns very pitifully, but it is all stuff
but now tell how you anad to t hi back”
then rda and kay told her all about it
“snip, snap, snare! it’s all right at st,” said the robber - girl
then she took both their hands, and proised that if ever she should pass through the town, she would call and pay the a visit
and then she rode away to the wide world
但是格尔达和凯手牵手朝家走去;
but rda and kay went hand - - hand towards ho;
and as they advanced, sprg appeared ore lovely with its green verdure and its beautiful flowers
very on they regnized the r town where they lived, and the tall steeples of the churches, which the sweet bells were rgg a rry peal as they entered it, and found their way to their grandother’s door
they went upstairs to the little roo, where all looked jt as it ed to do
the old clock was gog “tick, tick,” and the hands poted to the ti of day, but as they passed through the door to the roo they perceived that they were both grown up, and bee a an and woan
屋顶上的玫瑰盛开着,从窗户往里窥探;
the roses out on the roof were full bloo, and peeped at the dow;
那儿放着小椅子,他们小时候就坐在这些椅子上;
and there stood the little chairs, on which they had sat when children;
and kay and rda seated theselves each on their own chair, and held each other by the hand, while the ld epty grandeur of the snow een’s pace vanished fro their ories like a paful drea
the grandother sat god’s bright sunshe, and she read aloud fro the bible, “except ye bee as little children, ye shall no wise enter to the kgdo of god”
and kay and rda looked to each other’s eyes, and all at once understood the words of the old ng,
“roses bloo and cease to be,
but we shall the christ - child see”
他们俩都坐在那里,已经长大成人,但内心仍是孩子;
and they both sat there, grown up, yet children at heart;
and it was sur, — war, beautiful sur
